PRESCHOOL/EARLY INTERVENTION

The Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 Preschool Early Intervention Program identifies and provides early intervention special education services to eligible young children who must meet the following criteria.

  • Ages 3 to 5 years old and not yet enrolled in kindergarten

  • Resident of Bedford, Blair, Cambria or Somerset County

  • Has a disability and/or exhibits a developmental delay of at least 25% in one or more of the following developmental areas:

    • Cognitive

    • Communication

    • Physical

    • Self-help

    • Social-emotional

  • and is in need of specially designed instruction

The process of determining that a child has a developmental delay usually begins with -

An intake meeting conducted by one of our service coordinators. During the intake meeting, the service coordinator will:

  • Talk with the family about their child's development

  • Conduct a screening. The screening process is used as a guide to determine the need for further testing

  • A comprehensive evaluation may be in need. An evaluation is only conducted upon receipt of:

  • The family's written consent. Once written consent is received, the multidisciplinary team can:

  • Begin the process of evaluation. Information provided by the family during the process of evaluation is considered invaluable.

Children who are eligible for Preschool Early Intervention Programs and Services are determined by the multidisciplinary team and the child's family who develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Preschool Early Intervention services for eligible young children are provided at no cost to the family.

The Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 offers a continuum of educational placement options including:

  • Early Childhood Environment

  • Part-Time Early Childhood Setting

  • Itinerant Services Outside The Home

  • Home Environment

  • Early Childhood Special Education Environment

  • Approved Private School Settings

Referrals can also be made by an Infant/Toddler Early Intervention Service Coordinator. For children over the age of 5 and are enrolled in a school-age program, please contact your school district.
